What is a Dental Implant? Procedures and Treatment Limitations

The dental implant was created to substitute for the actual root or natural tooth root. Dental implants can be used to replace one tooth for those who have lost all their teeth. Most dental implants are made of titanium because of its compatibility with human bone. However, for people who have allergies or are unable to use titanium implants due to other reasons, we also have dental implants manufactured with other materials available, such as ceramic, that are compatible with the human body. For elderly patients or those with underlying medical conditions that may reduce the success rate of implant placement, implantologists can select implants with special specifications to enhance treatment success.

At Dentalwise Clinic, we are ready to provide you with the best dental implants from the world’s leading dental implant manufacturers like Straumann and Astra Tech. In addition, we also offer quality standard dental implants at an affordable price as an alternative, such as Hiossen USA. With the expertise of experienced dental specialists, patients can be assured of durable and aesthetically pleasing replacement teeth. Most importantly, dental implants restore natural mastication ability, allowing patients to enjoy eating with confidence.

Dental Implant Process

  1. The implantologist will examine the jaw bone and take an X-ray to evaluate, make the treatment plan, and design the type of denture and the number of implants to be used.
  2. A 3D X-ray of the teeth and jaw, or a Dental Cone Beam CT Scan, is taken to assess bone volume and plan the implant placement to ensure it is aligned correctly and avoids nerves and blood vessels in the jawbone.
*Dental Cone Beam CT Scan enhances the safety of the implant procedure, reduces potential complications, and improves treatment accuracy and effectiveness.
  3. If the remaining jaw bone is too thin or too small, the Implantologist may have to do bone augmentation or bone grafting by using synthetic bones or the bones from other areas of the patient’s own body before placing the implant. However, if a large amount of bone is required, the implantologist may perform the bone graft first, leave the artificial bone to heal for a few months, and then place the implant in a later session.
  4. A dental implant is placed into the jawbone, the area where the natural teeth are removed. It is performed under local anesthesia.
  5. The dental implant is allowed to heal and firmly attach to the jawbone, typically for about 3 months
  6. Make a custom-made artificial tooth to be placed onto the implant as planned, which may include crowns, bridges, or even full dentures that can be removed or attached to the dental implant. It takes approximately 1-2 weeks.

Our dentist team of implant dentistry and prosthodontics consists of dentists and faculty members with extensive experience in implant dentistry and prosthodontics. Post-Implant Care

To ensure the longevity and aesthetics of your dental implant, it is essential to follow your dentist’s instructions carefully and maintain proper oral hygiene. Here are some key guidelines:

Regular Dental Checkups

Monitored the condition of the implant, gum health, and overall oral hygiene.

Use Appropriate Cleaning Tools

Choosing a soft-bristled toothbrush, non-abrasive toothpaste to protect the implant crown’s surface, and dental floss to clean between teeth.

Avoid harmful habits

Avoid smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, chewing on hard objects, or grinding your teeth, as these habits can negatively impact your implant.

Avoid foods that may be harmful to your implants

Avoid hard or sticky foods and very hot or cold foods. Choose soft foods, especially during the first 1-2 weeks.

Limitations of Dental Implant Treatment

Despite advancements in dental implant technology and the high success rate recognized globally, not everyone is a suitable candidate for this treatment. Several factors must be carefully considered by a specialized dentist to ensure both safety and optimal results. Key considerations include:

  • Patients under 18 years old, as their jawbones are still developing.
  • Individuals with uncontrolled medical conditions, such as uncontrolled diabetes, which may affect healing.
  • Patients undergoing radiation therapy in the head and neck area.
  • Those with poor oral hygiene, who are prone to severe tooth decay in pulp or advanced periodontal disease that can affect surrounding tissues.
  • Individuals with Immunodeficiency.
  • Patients with insufficient jawbone volume at the implant site, who may require bone grafting before the procedure.
  • People taking certain medications, such as Immunosuppressants, Osteoporosis medication, or some of thrombolytic agents (clot busters).
  • Regular smokers and heavy alcohol consumers.
  • Pregnancy.

Before undergoing treatment, patients should always receive a thorough examination and consultation with a specialized dentist to determine the best course of action for successful and long-lasting results.
